3 out of 5 stars You can do better with less money   June 3, 2010

When I was new in art school, I bought this board as well as other boards sold in art supply stores that typically have clamps. The design looked appealing initially, but proved to be an inconvenience in use.

The clamps take up valuable space, making the actual sheet it accommodates smaller than 26 in. The clamps even become a pain if you want to use it with a big pad of news print to do life drawings, because you need to flip the pages quickly when the pose changes.

A better and cheaper option is to buy a medium density fiberboard in Home Depot or other similar stores. It is made of the same material. It comes in at much bigger size. Then have the store cut it to the size you want. Often you can get a few boards with different sizes out of one board. All of my art friends quickly switched to this approach once they figured that they needed more drawing boards.

To use the DIY board, artists typically tape the paper to the board with painter's tape or masking tape carried by Home Depot alike. Or you can get two clamps and use them instead of tape. It is also advisable to tape 1-2 sheet of newsprint paper underneath the drawing sheet to make the support a bit softer.

5 out of 5 stars Very good   January 23, 2010

I bought a drawing board from a local art supply shop for around $8; I went to a number of places and it was the only one I could find. They appparently have them at some Michaels, but I've heard theyre worse than the one I found. I knew it would be a temporary fix and planned to order a better one on Amazon.

This board here is 100% better. It is extra firm masonite (nearly twice as thick as my other board) and doesn't have very much wobble to it at all. The clips are high quality with two springs on each (my other board has much smaller, single spring clips)

My only complaints are this:
The handle on mine is cut out a bit too far down- it makes holding the handle akward after long peroids of time

The clips, while overall good and are exactly the kind of clips you'd expect, are not as tall as the clips on my other board. I could clip my drawign pad onto it and walk around without any worry of the pad slipping down. On this board, the pad slides out rather easily because the clips hit the wire binding instead of the pages.

Which is no biggie. I can imagine that these slimmer clips would be better at some times. Like I said the clips are overall very strong, just not very tall. (they open up all of the way but at rest on the board there is only a very small gap between the top of the clip and the board)

With all of that said, I still rate a 5/5 because it really is the best board I've found.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Sketch Board at a Great Price   April 26, 2009

I ordered this sketch board to work in watercolors. I ordered the larger size because I wanted it specifically for watercolors. The board also comes in smaller sizes which are great for "in the field" sketching. I was really impressed with the strength and quality of the board. It fully supports your work, with no "give" to the board. It is very sturdy. The clamps hold your work firmly and you do not have to worry about the paper moving around on you. The price was exceptional and you get a board with features that should (and in other places would) cost a great deal more. The very best combination of price and quality. You actually get more than you pay for.
